Cosmo: The Underwater Treadmill
15 February 2017
For Cosmo each day starts with taking some joint supplements and some anti-inflammatory medicine; in pure Labrador style he takes these with ease before his breakfast, then twice a week he comes to Pride Veterinary Centre's Rehabilitation Suite where he goes on the Underwater Treadmill.
Once dressed in his swimsuit he gets taken to the treadmill, where the tank is filled with water to hip height. The buoyancy relieves some of the pressure on his joints by reducing how much body weight he has to carry, making moving less painful and more comfortable. The water is warm at around the 30' marker, which increases the circulation of blood to the muscles reducing pain and stiffness.
Currently Cosmo has a gentle session while he gets back in the swing of things, as you can see in the video here his back legs are very staggered and he is struggling to walk on the treadmill. This will get easier for him throughout his sessions at Pride, where he will build up muscle to better support his joints and keep him moving.
Stay tuned to see how he is in a few weeks when he is in for a check up with Physiotherapist Tamsyn Lafferty.
